Minister of Women Affairs, Aisha Al-Hassan has said the Federal government recognizes Islamic laws that supports child marriage but a girl has to be at least 18 years old before she can be given out in marriage. She said this at a meeting in Abuja to launch the campaign against Child marriage in Nigeria by 2020.
"We cannot change the position of the Islamic laws especially since it is recognized in the Nigerian constitution but for the purpose of this campaign that we are launching, we are saying that to us, we agree with Islam but the child should be married when she is matured. There should be adequate advocacy, publicity and enlightenment to this 2020 goal initiative. The ministry (of women affairs) whose project it is should also embark on widespread legislative lobbying. Though I'm privy to certain senators culpable of bygamy, no thanks to our so called culture and religion. The question I dare to ask however is, 'how many law makers have their female children under the age of 18 married? If they are not schooling abroad, they are tuck away in overseas conveniently. Given lamentable inability of gender equality bill to scale through parliamentary process, one would as well wonder what kind of nation we are.
Finally girl-child marriage comes with heavy medical implication for the victims. Young lady whose pelvic muscles aren't strong to pass through spontaneous child labour will end up suffering complications at the uterus and in most cases suffer vesicoviginal fistula (vvf), which is prevalent among under aged girls in the northern part of our country
