The Silver Lining is EkoBits

Amidst the bad news of fighting and fire that has destroyed the Otodogbame community, there were shouts of joy and laughter by the youth on Friday 18th November as students celebrated their graduation from Ekobits.

EkoBits ICT and Digital Design Academy was set up by Poise Nigeria and Work in Progress! Alliance to enable disadvantaged youth from informal settlements access and develop digital design skills that will enable them earn a living.

The smiles on the faces of the youth were as contagious as the tears of joy from their parents. The EkoBits Manager, Innih Ikhide expressed joy that though some of the students experienced a set back as a result of a clash, the participants remained motivated and committed toward the program.

EkoBits is part of a network of BITS Schools that offers demand aligned training in creative technology that targets underprivileged youth leading them to income generating opportunities.
The Academy started on September 5th, 2016 in Lagos with fifty students from Otodogbame, Itedo, Babalola and others of such communities. Since then the students have been trained on basic ICT Skills, Basic design skills and life skills.

This graduation signals the end of course one and the beginning of course two which will last for six months. During course two students will acquire further trainings in digital design, photography, videography, website design, etc.

Just when the students and their parents thought the day could not get any better, the Group C.E.O of Poise Nigeria, motivated the students with her life story encouraging them that it is possible for them to reach the pinnacle of any career path no matter what their background may be. Mrs. Mavi Isibor also announced that Poise Nigeria will be organizing a free day of shopping for the affected communities on Sunday where members of the public can donate to items to the families affected by the clash.

This is truly a silver lining in the midst of a storm. We are glad that EkoBits exists to give skills and hope to young people in Lagos.

You can support EkoBits as an individual, corporation, a donor organization or group of friends.

A message from Ukinebo Dare (Programme Director, Ekobits)

“Kindly contact EkoBits on: or We will be glad to tell you more about our strategies.

Your donation will go a long way in helping young people from informal settlements access ICT skills, mentoring, soft skills & life skills.”
