Pope Francis grant all catholic priests power to forgive abortion

 Pope Francis, who is the 266th and current Pope of the Roman Catholic Church, has granted all priests the power to forgive abortion, a right previously reserved for bishops in most parts of the world. He said:

‘I henceforth grant to all priests, in virtue of their ministry, the faculty to absolve those who have committed the sin of procured abortion.
  The provision I had made in this regard, limited to the duration of the Extraordinary Holy Year, is hereby extended.’
The Argentine Pope made the announcement in a document known as an ‘apostolic letter’ after close of the Church’s ‘Holy Year of Mercy’ on Sunday, explaining that he wanted to restate as firmly as he can that abortion is a grave sin, since it puts an end to an innocent life but insisted that there was no sin God’s mercy cannot reach and wipe away when it finds a repentant heart seeking to be reconciled with God.

 According to Independent report, the change would last for at least the rest of his papacy.

This is why I cannot be a catholic. No human being has the right to forgive sins but Christ. Also the catholic church has all these doctrines that I do not see in the bible. Man made like the Pharisees of old to oppress people and block the way to heaven.

With all humility, I wish to mae this contribution here. If you have sat by a dying person you will understand that LIFE IS A SERIOUS BUSINESS.Too serious to be played with. It is painful to find that God did not give any man such authority as the Popes take upon themselves. And I ask Catholic members "what would you do if in afterlife you discover that the Church you attended had decieved you, who would you blame? PLS HUG AND READ YOUR BIBLE NOW BEFORE IT BECOMES TOO LATE. If you go to hell nobody will have time to set you free because someone decieved you. I wish you a good and a godly life.

Yes, Christ did give his apostles the power to forgive sins and follow his example when he said: "As the Father has sent me, even so I send you" And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and said to them, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained’" (John 20:21–23). His word is truth.

He said this after his resurrection cos he wanted this to continue. But then priests cannot forgive sins they do not know about or have not heard, so confession became necessary for a Priest to hear the sins and forgive the sin, and counsel people who struggle with sin. And to prepare people to be truly remorseful about sin, to hate sin and to accept the gift of forgiveness & reconciliation.

Since he would not always be with the Church visibly, Christ gave this power to his apostles, which is the continuation of his presence throughout time (Matt. 28:20), to be able to offer forgiveness to future generations. He gave his power to the apostles, and it was a power that could be passed on to their successors and agents, since the apostles wouldn’t always be on earth either, but people would still be sinning

It's shocking to know that GOD gave MAN the ability to forgive sins, right? but then why did Jesus come? To bridge that gap between God and man, to reconcile us to the Father, and to give us all powers over the enemy. Christ in his last words gave us EVERYTHING. If he can give us all that, he can definitely give man the authority to forgive sins.

The Pharisees too didn't understand when Jesus went about forgiving sins. They called it blashphemy, because up till then, only GOD/YAHWEH had the power to forgive sins, not man. During his life, Christ forgave sins. He exercised this power in his human capacity as the Messiah or Son of man, telling us, "the Son of man has authority on earth to forgive sins" (Matt. 9:6), which is why the Gospel writer himself explains that God "had given such authority to men" (Matt. 9:8). "When the crowd saw this, they were filled with awe; and they praised God, who had given such authority to man"

God alone remains all powerful, omnipotent and omniscient. But everything Christ did on earth, he gave us power to do and continue in his path. This makes the devil churn, that MAN has such power over him. Yes, we are gods and we are like GOD. Glory to God!

There are many things u don't understand and probably would never understand because of your attitude...but be careful what you say and comment. Do you guys read your Bible at all or u just take what favours you and leave the rest?
Brethren there is a place in Bible where Jesus Christ said to the apostles in John 20:23 Whose soever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them; and whose soever sins ye retain, they are retained--King James version.
New living translation broke it down If you forgive anyone's sins, they are forgiven. If you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven."
So stop judging and read and study the word of God and not the word of your pastors

@Catholic girl.
1. In John 20:23, Jesus tells His disciples, “If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven." The very core of the gospel message is the truth that the way someone has their sins forgiven is by having faith in Jesus Christ as his or her Lord and Savior. In Acts 10:43-44, when Peter was sharing the gospel, he said, “Everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.” First John 5:1-5 tells us only he who believes in Jesus will overcome the world. Luke 5:20 says, “When Jesus saw their faith, He said ‘Friend, your sins are forgiven.’” Colossians 2:13-14 says Jesus forgave all our sins. All these passages confirm that Jesus is the one who forgives sin, and He forgives all of our sins. If we have had genuine faith in Him, someone else cannot later decide we are not forgiven one sin or another. So, what exactly did Jesus mean in John 20:23?
2. Only God can forgive sins, and Christ, being God, has the power to do so as well, but He never communicated any such power to His disciples, nor did they ever assume any such power to themselves. The key to understanding the meaning of John 20:23 lies in the previous two verses: “Again Jesus said, ‘Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.’ And with that he breathed on them and said, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit.’” He sent them, as He is sending us, to bring the good news of the way to salvation and heaven to the whole world. Jesus was leaving the earth physically but promised God would be with them in the person of the Holy Spirit living in them. As they proclaimed the gospel, they could honestly tell people who believed in that message that their sins were forgiven, and they could honestly tell people that did not believe in the message that their sins were not forgiven and that they stand condemned in God’s eyes. Jesus said, “Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on him” (John 3:36).
3. Believers today have the very same mission given to us! We are obligated to share the gospel message, the way to heaven, to others in the world, and we go about that mission with the Holy Spirit living inside us, guiding us as we share His truth. We are obligated to tell people the only way to be forgiven is through faith. Jesus said in John 8:24, “If you do not believe that I am (God), you will indeed die in your sins.” This is the very core of the gospel message and the very heart of what we are to explain to the world. It was Jesus’ last command to His followers before He physically left the earth—carry forward the message of hope and save as many as will believe in Him.

Well said. The authority given to the apostles stem from Jesus christ and its very clear to all. It was mentioned many times that that which is agreed on earth; is agreed in heaven. What is bound on earth I bound in heaven. Jesus gave Peter authority as the rock of his church and the pope is a scion of Peter.

@Catholic girl,
It is impossible for a man or a woman to forgive the sins of another no matter how highly placed the individual is, whether he or she appears in a bright earthly garment. Forgiveness is of God alone. Only He has the power to forgive.
The book of Galatians further makes it clear with the following admonition that whatever a man sows that he MUST reap.
Therefore, do not be deceived that any man can make your sin vanish by a prayer of intercession. At best, a prayer of intercession can help provide the enabling soil for which forgiveness can be obtained but it is dependent on the person being prayed for to prepare a receptive soil for it. The receptive soil implies that such a person is very willing to make changes for the good otherwise the prayer will have no effect.
Even the words from John 20:23 does not imply that we can choose to act arbitrarily, that is, whether it rests in our power to forgive or not. The words are much deeper than the literal meaning. They point out how we must act towards one another. In other words, it admonish that it is better to forgive than not to forgive. For if you forgive, you will be forgiven, otherwise you will not be forgiven.
The point above is clearly reaffirmed in the Lord's Prayer, in the words; forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.
Therefore, we must address our prayer of forgiveness to God and redouble effort to live according to His will so that our sins might be forgiven.
Shalom!
