Chijioke Obioha has been executed in Singapore, Roman Catholic Prison Ministry to claim his body for burial

Nigerian death row convict, Chijoke Stephen Obioha was executed in Singapore early this morning, after the Court of Appeal dismissed an Urgent Criminal Motion filed by his lawyer, Mr Joseph Chen, yesterday.

The Singapore Anti-Death Penalty Campaign member, Mr Ravi, who is assisting Mr Joseph with the research for the case, took to his Facebook page an hour ago to announce the news.

"This morning, at 6am, the execution of Chijioke Stephen Obioha took place. I am not even sure if his family from Nigeria were able to attend. Soon it will be all forgotten together with Chijioke’s name, but for the many of us who fight and campaign to eradicate this barbaric practice of death by hanging, and for those of us who challenge the mandatory death penalty for drug trafficking in Singapore, our work will go on. And it must."

In an update, Mr Ravi said that he is making arrangement with the Roman Catholic Prison Ministry to claim his body for proper burial today or tomorrow.

"Update: I'm currently arranging with the Roman Catholic Prison Ministry ( RCPM) to claim the body of Chijioke from the Singapore Prisons Service for a proper funeral in accordance with his religious beliefs. The funeral will take place either today or tomorrow depending on how soon the SPS could release the body.
Will keep you posted"

Chijoke was first arrested in 2007 and sentenced to the Mandatory Death Penalty in 2008 after being found guilty of trafficking more than 2kg of Cannabis. His execution tomorrow will bring and end to possibly the longest delay between sentencing and execution. Chijoke has spent almost 8 years on death row and more than 9 years behind bars.

This is an unfortunate incident. My heart goes out to his family.
However, here are my own 2 kobos:

When you know a country's law and insist you are going to break it, then this is what happens.
Drug trafficking is a serious crime. If you really want to understand how many lives are destroyed by drugs, take a trip to any drug rehabilitation centre; there's one in Aro, Abeokuta.

Those guys who engage in drug trafficking are not poor. they live large in Nigeria And for them it is business.
Making money at the expense of others. We need to talk straight rather than just putting out there that "execution by hanging is barbaric". Drug trafficking is not petty stealing.

I feel so bad, so terrible. There is no sin greater than the other. Death sentence isn't fair. It's barbaric. It's injustice in itself. Sentencing for whatever crime should be corrective not outright killing. O my God!

I pray seriously that, this will help to stop our children male and female from trafficking in illegal drugs. May his soul be forgiven and rest in peace. Death penalty is barbaric and should be abolished. God says THOU SHALL NOT KILL.

Difficult to shed a tear for someone who was trafficking something that would KILL others. I would rather worry about the INNOCENT young people facing hardship. Why should Nigerian government intervene? Na dem send am? I hope we all learn from this.

This news is very heart-breaking. I feel pity for him and his family. Besides, did anyone even notice the fact that he stayed up to 8 years behind bars before his executuon. If our government was not corrupt, they ought to have done something within that period. RIP..

kai, Kai, kai... i dont know this guy but i cant stop crying, it hurting me so terribly. what he did is wrong, he was actually killing other vulnerable people with those drugs, but must it be punishment by hanging? God accept his soul by your mercy and let him find eternal rest IJN, amen. let us learn my people, even I am suffering but ones you have the basics please just keep trusting God for the best. the people who cajole you into this business will not tell you the implication, even in the countries where death is the punishment, some of the drug lord may lie to you that, they can get you out if you are caught., see am now. i feel so bad for the family. i can imagine that they would have been praying for him to be set free.

I am sorry to say this, but i dont pity him. Igbos no dey hear word. If he had escaped this death sentence, he would have still trafficked another drug again. They dont listen and they never stop. They keep giving Nigeria a bad name abroad. The get money quick syndrome is all over the Igbo land. Tufiakwa!

Singapore is a wicked nation. For cannabis? They could have jailed him instead of hanging him like an animal. God will surely judge this matter.

Anonymous said...

Any body that condems this young man that that was trying to make ends meet, let is be so to the person in Jesus name. This is absolutely wrong . Killing for the sake of man made law. What of us that breaks God's law daily yet he still loves us

Anonymous said...

Even the bible says give what is Caesar to Caesar which means obey the laws of the land. Igbos dont learn from mistakes. They will still do another one again. It is well
