Twitter users go gaga after Pst Sam Adeyemi 'demonizes' mental illness by saying 'sin is the root cause of mental illness'

Popular Pastor, Sam Adeyemi of Daystar Christian Center, caused controversy today, during the Sunday morning's service as he preached that sin was the root cause of mental illness, there was a link between physical and spiritual well-being and that the foundational solution to mental health was 'salvation'.

His official Twitter handle posted his statements from the church service and it immediately got social media users talking with some criticizing him for trying to 'spiritualize' and 'demonize' mental illness saying he shouldn't speak on Psychiatry as he wasn't a professional in that field while his church members, off course, defended his statements.

The pastor, upon seeing the backlash online, posted more tweets clarifying that sound mental health was part of salvation and that mentally sick people should seek medical help while working on their salvation .

See more of his tweets and reactions below...

I do not want to go deep into this, but the verse of the bible he made reference to Romans 6:23 has nothing to do with sin been the root cause of mental illness-"For the wages of sin is death;but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord".

Being someone with mental health isues, I honestly believe he is right. When you realise that it is a spiritual problem and dig deep to disavow such negative spirit then the road to healing and freedom.
Sorry to disappoint but he is right 100 percent.

Nigerians are so naive. They believe everything that comes from their pastor. They forgot that these so called pastors are human and as such they are bound to make mistakes, and when they do they need to be corrected. You are wrong pastors

Ppl can just capitalise on one tweet without fully understanding the complete and holistic picture of what Pastore Adeyemi was teaching about...Pastor Adeyemi clearly stated that Sin is the root cause of all sickness in mankind....there was no sickness before Adam and Eve sinned...after they sinned sickness came inot the picture....hence it is very true and right to say that sin is the root cause of sickness.....

D thunder wey go strike una dey do press up...OLOHUN!!!

Wait, someone who took hard drugs and went gaga. Is that not a sin??.... sharrap if u can't read or listen properly. Seek help where it's needed.

Y una dey para na? D man is saying d truth and it's difficult for most people to get d gist cos dem dey reason psychiatric matters. If d world was without sin like it was originally created to be, then there wl be nothing like mental illness.

@dj banti it is better for you to keep ur mouth shut instead of saying what will later give u problems. Ministers of the gospel are answerable to only God and not you.

I have nevr heard of this pastor before, but, I guess, he needs to go back to theological school. Most clerics nowadays are taught psychology and psychiatry,so that they would have knowledge about mental health and know the difference between mental health and spiritual issues. Coz, if he was knowledgeable about mental health, he would take be making such blunders. He sounds like a man that is trying to speak too much English to his congregation, confusing them and also confusing himself. By the way, I am a mental health practitioner

I can't really say that d root cause of dementia is cos of one's sins
But I sincerely believe that it's permanent solution solely lies on one's personal salvation with God!
Am writing as one that has been opportuned to deal with dementia patients esp those with Alzheimer's......
