Photos: Anglican priest celebrates Nigeria's 56th Independence at rubbish dump in Owerri

Rev. Canon Uche Chinamerem, a priest of the Anglican Diocese of Owerri and Chaplain of the Chapel of the Holy Spirit, Imo State University, Rev. Canon was pictured posing before a heap of refuse on Douglas Road, Owerri, on Saturday, while celebrating Nigeria's 56th independence Anniversary. Rev. Chinamerem, drank and shared wine with another man, while a group of traders watched the mild drama. Speaking to a journalist on the phone, the clergy said that he took the shots to protest the dirty lifestyle of people of the state and government negligence.

"I went to celebrate in front of the refuse dump because what is there is shameful. Let’s accept that the government refused to clear the refuse, how can a normal human being go to the market every day, trade within that dirty environment and think nothing about the refuse? Don’t we have market women association, community groups or vigilantes in the area? Obviously, they are waiting for the government to clear the refuse. In Igbo parlance, we say a rejected man does not reject himself. Why have we decided to reject ourselves? Why can’t we clear the refuse and tell the government that if it cannot be responsible, we are responsible citizens? So, this is not just about spiting the government, but telling our people to wake up and do the right thing when the government has failed."

I've said this before, there's no government anywhere in all the south east states, except Anambra state. Again, because the Igbo man is the most docile citizen on earth, the governors and other political representatives care no hoot about the citizens

What is happening in Imo State is a total embarrassment!
To think some people haven't realised it is even more shameful. I remember the times of Ikedi Ohakim in 2008/2009 when Owerri was about the cleanest city in Nigeria, where even a sachet of pure water could not be spotted.

I miss that Imo State with good roads, fresh breath and flexible educational system for its indigenes.

Now we say we have change and that PDP is corruption, yet our lives were better when PDP was in Power.

The worst part is that the people who are supposed to make a difference are all busy buying up properties in Lagos.

Let me tell you all, Lagos is not a "no man's land", it is someone's heritage. Please go back to Owerri and hold your Governor responsible cos he has destroyed the Eastern heartland.

That's Rochas' new face of Imo state. As he builds flooded tunnels he can't ensure that the Owerri main street is free of mountain of garbage. Meanwhile his face and that of his chief of staff is plastered all over the state. Chai.

Rochas is a complete fool and the priest is bias. This dirt is as a result of usual monthly sanitation which Rochas purposely didnt want his workers to clear cos the market people insulted him the last time he visited the market. How do u expect people to worship u as a governor when u are constantly causing them pains. To u Rochas, respect is earned, u can take it to the bank. U cant buy it with money...keep trying. Imo people are never dirty people, u can check records, Imo is the neatest state outside Calabar as at 2010. Rochas, i put it to u that u are a disgrace to the good people of Imo. May God judge u for causing pains to people who voted for u. Ewuawusa!

This priest should hit the nail at the head. Dam it! Is the duty of market people to clear waste dump from sanitation or Imo ENTRACO. Why is that dump only seen at that particular spot of he wasnt trying to purnish the market people for calling him Ewu hausa. If u want to speak, be fearless and say it exactly the way it is. This has been the normal way of doing sanitation in Imo(tho i dnt like this style) since Rochas became the governor. And the the waste will be cleared before 12:00pm.
