Mother prevented by immigration officials at MMIA from traveling with her children without consent from husband

Victor Asemota narrated the incident on Twitter yesterday, October 29th. Is this an official policy? Does it apply to only Nigerian women? Do fathers also need permission from wives before traveling with the children? Some women on Twitter said they have experienced same while others said they traveled with their children without any hitch.

Have you experienced such? Given the rate of kidnapping and child trafficking in the country, it's a good move provided consent from both parents are required not just mothers. See more tweets after the cut...

@Asemota i think you are not saying the truth cause here in USA a single parent can't get the kids their passport it must be both parties unless one is dead and you will present the certificate and once you have that you are good and Nigeria immigration are doing the right thing and stop making it look feminists they do it to both party thumbs Nigeria immigration

Linda, it is in fact my law, to obtain permission from your spouse, legally, before taking the kids out of the country...Even if you're divorced. And I'm talking from experience because my wife is a latina and we both resides in different countries.

Traficking has to end. This has to be discussed in Nigerian forum - naija forum.

the person who reported this needs to wake up because its not new ,its done abroad also ,i cant take my kids out of the country without an authorization letter from their mother and same thing applies to her if she wanna travel with the kids ,i am talking about portugal ,its just against people running away with kids without either the father or mother knowing .

What if the woman is a widow or a divorcee? So she cannot enjoy with her children alone? Na wah oh

I don't see anything wrong in immigration officers asking for father's consent when a mother is travelling alone with a baby. There are definitely so many cases of child trafficking, it is for the child's safety. The security agents should be allowed to carryout their duties without being labelled evil. Asemota is not a trained security agent hence he is moved by the emotional drama displayed by the woman, that doesn't mean the woman is telling the truth. Mr. Asemota, you have allowed your emotions to cloud your judgement.

It's a rule in Canada and US. A parent must get consent from the spouse or other parent until the child is 16

What if the parents of the children are seperated and they are keeping malice as in they dont talk to each other? I know a lot of seperated couples that dont talk to each other. What if the father of the child denied the child at birth? What if the child was rejected by the father and the woman struggled alone to take care of the child? What if the child is an orphan and was adopted by a single mother? Immigration needs to put all these questions begging for answers into consideration

Davido was stopped too and we were all aware of it because his baby mama didn't give her consent. Let's not be quick to jump into conclusions and castigate our law enforcement especially when we are ignorant of the law especially on child trafficking. This is the same way the lady who kidnapped the little hausa girl just because she was fine and would have escaped with her if she wasn't stopped airport by the same immigration and if asemota was there that day he would have caused more confusion all in the name of social freedom fighting. It goes beyond feminism or chauvinism it's security by common sense. If she was refuse even with her husbands consent then immigration will be acting against the province of the law not otherwise

Victor Asemota should get educated on immigration laws for different countries. Parental consent is required for some travels even as a father...even to obtain travel documents in some countries it is required. Now the authority dey work una dey blame dem

My wife was delayed for a whole day at Newark Airport because she couldn't produce a written letter of consent from me!

This kinda policy is absurd!

Ibis Cookey said...

This is very normal. It occurs outside Nigeria lots as well. There are lots of ifs ands and buts. Both mothers and fathers need letters from each other to show the other persons consent. If you're both keeping malice then you have to talk for the sake of the kids.

Ibis Cookey said...

You're so right.

The immigration did nothing wrong. you should ask questions and know what is tenable in the immigration laws. We live in a lawless country, that is why we question everything our immigration does.

both linda and the person the made the post are daft, so what is wrong in immigration doing their work.

Anonymous said...

I have experienced the same!

Try getting a Nigerian international passport for your child/children first & see the hurdles you'd encounter.

This is also done in Canada. Mother or father needs written permission to travel with kid out of the country

When Davido wanted to travel with his daughter did d immigration not stop him cos d mother did not consent. Why must everything be seen as a gender issue

AfricaUncut Tv said...

The same rule applies in the UK. I have a friend who recently had the same experience. His wife tried to return to Lagos with his child without his consent, he rang the police and she was stopped at heathrow airport and charged with Adoption. So yeah, it just not in Nigeria, it happens in the west as well. This Victor Asemota needs to clear his head of colonial enslavement. It doesn't have to be a law in the west for it to be a law in Nigeria. What works for the west doesn't necessary means it has to work for Nigeria and versa vase.

You need spousal consent. A client of mine forged her husband's signature n ran off with the daughters. Had to plead with the man to allow her be if not immigration were ready to have her deported.

Quite sad, but it's legal. She should have gotten her spouse's consent before traveling... #SecurityMatters

Yes its for real, I travelled from the UK to Canada this year with my 2 children and it was hell with the Canadian immigration , I dint have a letter of authorisation from hubby. They question ed the life out of my kids, ages 5 and 7. Lucky enough I had my marriage certificate and children's Bc that had their Dad's name on it.

Anonymous said...

Ahahah dis is the law. Nothing chauvinistic about it, same applies fr men. It is right to do so, some ppl run away with their kids. It is a different matter if d parent is dead. Probably d womans first time of travelling alone

King Maker said...

What's up with people and playing the gender card. Let's be realistic, most men don't travel with their children alone without their wives and has it been confirmed that men are being allowed to travel with their kids without their wives consent?

This is why you should go to a spermicide bank and buy! Very cheap and NO DRAMA !!!
For peace of your mind and the sake of sanity.
Or if you can't or won't or don't want to give birth anyhow, the go to an orphanage and adopt a child!!!
No immigration and no baga...or entity from anywhere can stop you from travelling around the world, enjoying happiness and living a good family life.
BY HOOK OR BY CROOK. Shikena !!!
