It is hypocritical to block us from using coal-fired power- Adeosun tells western government

Minister of Finance, Mrs Kemi Adeosun yesterday described as hypocritical efforts by the western government to stop Nigeria from using coal-fired power to power their industries when infact it is the same coal-fired power system that has helped countries like Britain achieve the kind of industrialization it has now.

Speaking at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) discourse on infrastructure in Africa ‎at the George Washington University USA, Adeosun frowned at the recent blockage of a coal project to Nigeria by some Western powers.
“The case, if you look at the numbers of business cases in Africa, is quite a huge one. Yes, we do need macroeconomic stability. We also do need consistency of policies by the multilateral institutions and western countries. Let me give you an example. In Nigeria, we have coal and it doesn’t take a genius to work out what it will take to get coal-fired power. Yet, we are being blocked. I think there is some hypocrisy in that. We have an entire western industrialization that was built on coal-fired energy and that is the competitive advantage that has been used to develop Britain, where I grew up. Now, Africa wants to do it and they saying it’s not green, we can’t do and that we should go and do solar, wind, which are the most expensive power projects. The West cannot say that after polluting the atmosphere for 100 years, and when Africa wants to explore its resources, they say no. If we want to stop coal, those who started it over 200 years ago, should first stop using coal before telling us to stop”‎she said

What do you expect when we glue ourselves to the western world like a leach, ignoring our potentials and abilities in the process. For long we've always relied on the western world for things as simple as toothpick. Its common sense to understand that he who pays the Piper always dictates the tune.
We've got talents in this clime that cannot only transform coal to a source of power but can even work wonders on fart as a source of power😀

Hold up, how can they stop us,nigeria, a sovereign country from using our resources? How and why? I don't even wanna talk about the hypocrisy of them still using coal!

i have long waited for someone to realise this and i am happy that someone is finally making some very solid points i hope it doesn't stop here. we can completely power Nigeria with coal even if it means building IGCC (Integrated gasification combined cycle) coal plants to minimize Co2 emission. We (Nigeria) should not allow ourselves to be brought under by such subduing policies.

Bitch, coal is the dirtiest and biggest polluter of our environment. The West did it b/c they didn't know any better, and that's why they're shutting them down and not building any new ones. Think about the environment we gonna leave for our children. And remember, we did not inherit the earth from our parents, we borrowed it from our children.

HAHA THE HAVE TAKEN THIS THEIR STORY TELLING TO INTERNATIONAL LEVEL,WHEN YOUR POWER DRUNK NOTHERNERS DON'T WANT RESTRUCTURING BUT EYEING SOUTH EAST COAL DEPOSITS TO POLLUTE IGBOLAND,PARK WELL MADAM KEMI,YOU PEOPLE ARE BOMBING NIGER DELTA TO GET GAS,AND LATER BOMB SOUTH EAST TO GET COAL.DONT WORRY WE ARE SLEEPING.

What a knucklehead. Go ahead and use coal. We are a sovereign country nobody can dictate to us. Just don't go signing any document on climate change with western countries. This finance minister is so naive. Every one is going green now. Hence the wind and solar suggestion.

Were you not in the know when your country agreed and signed the treaty on 22nd of September 2016? Why come out now to make such ignorant statement? Is this an attempt to fool Nigerians to thinking you're fighting for our interest or an attempt by you to come across as intelligent, madam minister? BTW, we had the opportunity of utilising our coal as well in the last 100years, why didn't we? Now, it's ok for you to cry wolf, when the rest of the world are trying to do the right thing, right? Do you even know what global warming is or the effect of global warming in today's world? Madam minister, i will suggest you focus on your portfolio and look for solutions to get us out of our current economic situation.

I agreed with your statement, madam finance. But what would you expect, when our political leaders tied themselves to the apron of the western countries for everything. Must Europe and the west be the one to always approve our policies and actions before we can implement them? If our government ignores them heaven will not fall, and afterwards make amend. Invite our technologists and I'm sure they can be able to fabricate its machines

Madam what are you saying. It is a great idea but don't you work hand-in-hand with your Oga Buhari. Abi Buhari didn't know the implication of what he signed in US last time with the France President, Francois Hollande.

Yusuf Dimas said...

Quite a strong poiint there, but I tell you these treaties & policies by the IMF will not be that easy to change... & truth is, developing countries must find ways to minimize the use of coal because global warming is really a serious phenomenum bedeveling our world!

There are other safer means of generating power Nigeria should stay away from coal mining it will only bring death, pollution and destroy the environment. The west have realised their mistake and we should learn from them. ANYONE SUPPORTING COAL MINING SHOULD GO AND READ UP ON THE HAZARDS IT POSES ESPECIALLY IN A COUNTRY LIKE NIGERIA WHERE WE ARE CARELESS AND TAKE EVERYTHING FOR GRANTED

The era of coal energy is a bygone era madame. The west is advising solar and wind because that is the energy of the future...renewable energy. If you want to catch up or at least not lag behind the developed world anymore than we already do,then please look forwards not backwards.

uwa nkea said...

She's not right. Instead of bitching around, Nigeria should use this opportunity to be ahead in the advancement of solar and wind technology which are the future sources of energy. I pity Nigeria and her bunch of imbeciles called leaders.

This woman should stop seeking self glorification esp in the eyes of the public. If this is her opinion she should go and convince PMB afterall she has access to his ears or does she want us to carry placard to Aso rock on her behalf?. This is the same way she came on Channels to tell the public how she wants lower rates from MPC meeting. Mwl she and CBN Guv are peers and she can hold a retreat with him and convince him and other policy makers. Madam address ur solutions to the right quarters.

Quit telling ur plans 2 d West cos that's what u get when u do that. The West would not want d African nations 2 explore there greatness it's a far threat 2 them than a WMD so do what u have 2 do without telling them the West.

Personally,I think we as a nation, are short-sighted and very selfish. We are part of A GLOBAL COMMUNITY and because we want to generate power, we should employ archeic means through which to do this?!?!. When Britain had coal as the driver of their economy, little was known about green house gasses. If we had been present then...then no problems. Not now! we cannot afford to be irresponsible with our health and the health of the world for that matter. It is like someone who has cancer asking for more cigarettes. what do you think will happen? If anyone can assure me on the matters of pollution and responsible mining processes then count me as an advocate. outside that, it is TRULY a dumb idea.

Anonymous said...

Using Coal in this century, its like signing a death sentence...You should have thought of this a long time ago...The effects of Global warming is huge and that is why the western world have realized their effect and trying to reverse that by bringing a safe method using solar n wind...we need to go forward n not backward...Go to Enugu state and see the effect of coal mining on the land, the ozone layer is already depleted, people are looking for ways to reduce CO2 emission and reduce cfcs and we are talking of creating coal power plants...Please my dear Minister read and think of other intelligent, safer methods in saving the climate for our future generation(Sustainability)...The world is going green not black and that was why the president signed the treaty with france...im an environmentalist and i know this things...so this idea is not acceptable

Solar and wind are way too expensive to set up, not efficient, not economical and cant power heavy industries oga
