FG approves N3.5bn for the purchase of cars to aid prisons decongestion

The Federal Government at its Federal Executive Council meeting yesterday approved the sum of N3.5 billion to purchase 320 made-in-Nigeria vehicles to aid prisons decongestion across the country.  According to a memo presented to the council members by the  Minister of Interior, General Abdulrahaman Dambazau (rtd), the Nigerian prisons have for a long time suffered congestion of inmates due to lack of vehicles to transport some of them to ‎the court for hearing of the cases against them.
According to Dambazzau, 75% of an estimated 65,000 inmates in Nigerian prisons are mostly awaiting trial and due to unavailability of vehicles to transport them to the courts for trial, some of them have been in prison longer than they should.

The government just indicted itself on human rights failings, many innocent people are languishing in jail cos the authorities can't transport them to court. Probably been the case since the time of OBJ.

So a car would cost over 100 million naira??? Is it bugatti they want to buy?? 3.5 billion divided by 320??

Cheaper solution- move the courts to the prisons. The courts are made up of people. Have weekly/fortnightly hearings on the prison's premises. Use those millions of naira to renovate the prisons and rehabilitate prisoners

This is the most stupid thing I have yet heard from this government. How many cars do they want to buy? They do not need more than five cars. what they however need is expansion of the accommodation areas and more vocational opportunities in these prisons... Nigerian government, always spending cash wrongly. Jukwanu Ex-Gov Obi ke esi eme ya
