Chimamanda Adichie writes about Buhari & Nigeria's failed promises: "His intentions are rooted in an outdated economic model

In a country enamoured of dark humour, a common greeting among the middle class now is Happy recession!" Read OP-ED by acclaimed Nigerian writer Chimamanda Adichie for the New York Times:
"I was 7 years old the first time I recognized political fear. My parents and their friends were talking about the government, in our living room, in our relatively big house, set on relatively wide grounds at a southeastern Nigerian university, with doors shut and no strangers present.
Yet they spoke in whispers. So ingrained was their apprehension that they whispered even when they did not need to. It was 1984 and Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari was the military head of state. Governmental controls had mangled the economy. Many imported goods were banned, scarcity was rife, black markets thrived, businesses were failing and soldiers stalked markets to enforce government-determined prices. My mother came home with precious cartons of subsidized milk and soap, which were sold in rationed quantities. Soldiers flogged people on the streets for “indiscipline” — such as littering or not standing in queues at the bus stop. On television, the head of state, stick-straight and authoritative, seemed remote, impassive on his throne amid the fear and uncertainty..."

love her books...but she is tribalisitic / discriminatory and therefore very far from objective...looking at her choice of role models (this is entirely up to her) and more importantly her recognition of literary icons of black African heritage or descent it is no mistake that she never mentions Wole soyinka.
then she come out to say negative things about the president (which i agree with) however criticism without suggestions or ideas or solutions to address the negatives means that criticism lacks merit and is usually founded in discriminatory & personal origins.

In Nigeria everyone is everything once it does not follow their personal agenda...now shes an economist...

You have spoken well Amanda, my mum told me a similar story on how tough the economy was then, how they enforce prices on market goods, how solders flogged people on the road. His approach to government is soo outdated, Aisha his wife also testify to it.

Noble Ajuz said...

100 percent correct. I concur. His intentions might be good but its so outdated. You spent years contesting for this position but never deemed it fit to develop himself. A president who blatantly disobey the rule of law. So sad.

I've waited for this for long and now ur piece is finally here: i thought they've silenced u like they did to Soyinka. You couldn't have analysed it any better thats why i've longed to read ur piece on Buhari.

She writes in simple English, wole Soyinka uses highfalutin words. Her writing is far different from his, so why will he be her role model ?

I have never finished any Wole Soyinka's novel. His forth is in playwright and Chimamanda is a novelist. Stop being stupidily sentimental.

You need to keep quiet Oga. Aren't you old for this? You are waiting for the end to justify what means exactly?

What system is she talking about? Is the fighting of corruption? Perhaps the retrieval of looted funds, or may the return of some Chibok girls? My dear literature analyst, your words about Buhari may romanticize some people, but they have no place in a nation where previous leaders have stolen the future of the people. Buhari may not be perfect, but his imperfections are rooted in honesty and good intentions in reviving the Nigeria. Madam, use your platform to constructively criticize. You lost me the moment you spoke of the 80s.

Perhaps you are the one embroidered in tribalism! Her thoughts are very clear and valid and every right thinking Nigerian can attest to the fact that things are indeed falling apart!

It is not by force. She is free to choose whoever she wants as her role model. Personally I think she has a refined chinua Achebe's style-but I don't think she has named him a role model. You my friend are the tribalistic one. Everyone should be free to be inspired by whoever and whatever.
Secondly, no man is an island of knowledge. That she offers criticisms does not necessarily mean she must have solutions. Buhari has special advisers, ministers. It was left for him to have chosen people that result-oriented, but no, his ministers seem to be overwhelmed by the economic and country situation. This buhari's administration is like a repetition of his past.

A feminist shows up with caustic article the moment Buhari says something about his wife and kitchen.

I can remember the days of Buhari as military Head of State. The War Against Indiscipline was a huge blessing to Nigeria. Armed men will always go overboard in enforcement, excess of zeal. We can't blame the Head of State for that. He could not have instructed soldiers to whip people in the streets, if that actually happened. In terms of fear, however we value democracy, Nigeria is a country where people will not do right without fear. That is the unpalatable truth. If Buhari's military tenure had continued for five years, Nigeria would not be in its present mess. I believe that. So Jonathan, called 'clueless,' and his comdedy-act wife are preferable to Buhari? Every latest government is called the worst ever, but history will tell. I believe that by God's grace, if Buhari brings his policies to fruition, he would be a great blessing to this country. People naturally won't like him, for attacking thieves of public money. They would do their utmost to discredit him. God will frustrate them. God will destroy them. God will help Baba pull us up from the corruption that caused Nigeria's present tragic condition.
