Arrest of judges: Descent into Fascism - PDP

Read the statement below...
Sometime in the early hours of October 8th, 2016 men of the  Directorate of State Security (DSS) carried out Gestapo like invasions on the homes of a number of Justices of the Supreme Court of Nigeria  and the Federal High Court.
The affected Justices of the Supreme Court were, Sylvanus Ngwuta and  Inyang Okoro. The affected Judges of the Federal High Court were Muazu  Pindiga, Adeniyi Ademola, Abdullahi Liman and Nnamdi Dimgba.

At this time, Justices Ngwuta and Okoro of the Supreme Court and  Justices Adeniyi & Pindiga had been abducted and detained. Justice  Dimgba only escaped abduction because he was not at home at the time. Justice Abdullahi’s abduction was prevented by the timely intervention  of Governor Nyesom Wike, who insisted on the observance of the rule of  law and the application of due process.

Governor Nyesome Wike was assaulted by the men of the DSS during his  intervention causing him to sustain injuries on his arm. At a point, an officer pointed a fully cocked gun at him and threatened to shoot  him.

The invasion was carried out between 0100hrs and 0500hrs in the early  morning using hundreds of fully armed men of the DSS. During the  invasion, the Justices were manhandled and members of their families  as well as their household staff beaten up.

This invasion is the latest in a series of actions taken by the  President Muhammadu Buhari administration which reveal its disregard  for the rule of law and its abject disdain for the Principle of  Separation of Powers.

This inexorable slide into fascism began with the invasion of the Akwa  Ibom State Government House by the self same DSS, the continued  detention of several people despite Courts ordering their release, the  invasion of the Ekiti State House of Assembly and detention of Hon.  Akanni Afolabi and the invasion of the Zamfara State House of Assembly.

This slide into fascism has included a sustained attack on the  leadership of the National Assembly as President Buhari has sought to  break its independence and make it a rubber stamp to suit his will.

It is worthy to note that NEVER in the history of our Country has any  President attacked the Judiciary in such a manner. Even the late  dictator - General Sani Abacha, whose regime is remembered by many as  the second worst regime in Nigerian history, did not carry out such  Gestapo style attacks on the members of the Judiciary.

By bringing this attack to the Judiciary, President Buhari has shown  that he has no desire to respect the pillars of our democracy. He has  shown his desire to kill off our democracy and convert it to an  autocracy without checks and balances.

The government has no regard for the rule of law. They do not care  about Court Orders. This Government has disregarded the Orders of the  ECOWAS Court and every other Courts in the land and continue to detain  Dasuki illegally. They continue to detain hundreds of Nigerians  without bringing them to trial and against valid Court Orders.

For the avoidance of doubt, the Constitution in Section 153(1)(i) and  Part 1 of the Third Schedule thereto establishes the National Judicial  Council (NJC) and empowers same to regulate and discipline judges  across the Country. The proper path to follow to discipline erring  judges will be to forward a petition containing any wrong doing to the  NJC along with any evidence in support thereof.

The path not to follow is this Gestapo style invasion in the middle of  the night that involves the use of sledgehammers to breakdown gates  and front doors for DSS to gain access to the homes.

Nigerians can no longer afford to stand aside and watch the Buhari  Administration destroy the foundations of our democracy that we have  built for several years. Nigerians have a duty to speak out against  this sort of tyranny.

God bless Nigeria.

Signed:

Prince Dayo Adeyeye
National Publicity Secretary

Buhari will be consumed by his hatred for the Igbos and Niger Delta. I'll join to pray Psalm 109:8 for Buhari. I weep with Freeborn.

PDP, your party is too weak, and too lame. If this had happened with APC in opposition, they would have mobilized the civil societies and the press against the government. They would have also mobilized the labour unions, and by now ultimatum to the government would be coming from all angles. The government, by this their clamp down on judges had played into the hands of agents of destabilizations, and it's an opportunity to the opposition parties, and PDP in particular

But tell me what happens when the custodians of the law are corrupt and refuse to honor a summon from DSS?
Intrestingly almost everybody agrees that the Judges have a case to answer, opinion however differ on the manner of arrest. But everybody is the same before the law and daily we see and hear about how people are picked in different circumstances. If indeed we are same under the law of the federal Republic and we did not complain when others were picked, why are you worried about the Judges?

Mr Dino, I think many Nigerian are missing something from the whole scenario, the fact that judges are public servant i think if being caught in any ill manner they should be treated the way every other Nigerian would be treated. However judges are not God or ancestors and with my best knowledge non of them enjoyed immunity, so if DSS believe the best way to achieve what its needed to achieve is through the already used means let keep watching. Furthermore, reading some comments from well respected Nigerian on this matter make me feel we are not ready for anti corruption war, also when i checked those people given comments about what happened i could see that virtually 99% of them had went through one or many court cases, if truly those judges hands are clean then we should know that DSS would pay lot of money as damages for their acts. But i doubted this because before such action could be taken against serving judges we should understand one thing that DSS has more than needed evidence to convict them, so within two weeks many people who gave bad comments on the DSS action would praise them and know that the system changing.

@AKIN...Very soon you would be arrested by the local vigilante group in your area and you will begin to understand the true meaning of the rule of law and the fundamental human right of every citizen. The act of DSS is very wrong and has been condemn by very reasonable people except people like you who are yet to understand the true meaning of freedom of living your life.

This singular act has revealed that this administration is built on deceit and fraud, therefore, will not stand the test of time.....we are watching

Why wont PDP support the judges. They have bribed all the judges that's why they are in positions today that they dont deserve

If it was a common man that stole ordinary mobile phone in the market, they would have given him jungle justice even before the police arrives. So just because they are judges, they should give them an ovation treatment for being corrupt. I weep for Nigeria!

The members of the Stealing Association of Nigeria (SANs) hide under the No Bars Association (NBA) to perpetuate corruption in the land.

They travel on a regular basis to stash money abroad for themselves and on behalf of their treasury looting clients.

EFCC needs to concentrate on them first, call it stereotyping or whatever, the country needs healing.

It is on comment sections of blogs that the it's staggeringly clear that the youths of this Nation are wasted. All they chase is religion and beliefs without common sense. The way corruption has eaten deep in the Nigerian fabric, does it not call for the worse mode of invasion to get the truth, evidence and exposure of whoever is culprit?

Thieving Judges are being defended by the Nigerian illitrate graduates who fill the blogs comments section, too bad!!!

Not evenBuhari. They covered up his inability to provide his certificate; how wouldn't he know they're currupt? Now cause none of them is willing to heed to his bill for the so-called 'Emergency Rule', he's feeling suicidal cos he had
evil intention. Without Emegency Rule, he's doing this, how much more when he's granted Emegency Rule, he would
finish Nigeria. God will not let him. His days are
numbered. He had better repent of his evil ways.

People commit all sorts of crimes and hide under the cover of democracy. Was the DSS supposed to give the judges an ovation treatment for being corrupt? Wike has skeleton in his cupboard and should be investigated. He must have bribed the judge one time or the other that's why he went out to rescue the judge. What was Wike doing there at that time of the night? Corrupt fools fight for each other. Nigeria is messed up with these kind of leaders like Wike. He quickly build Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) building for lawyers so that they can be defending him because he knows he is corrupt. Who is fooling who? Smtcheew
