Recession: Kemi Adeosun endorses sale of some National assets

Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, over the weekend lent her voice to the call for the sale of some national assets to revive the economy. Adeosun endorsed the sale while speaking to some business editors in Abuja. Leadership quotes her as saying it is better to sell off under-utilized assets than borrow money to revive the economy
‘‘I think there are lots of assets being considered. There are some unused assets that are just lying idle and people have come and said, ‘These things you are not using, can we lease it from you?
I think when you are looking for money, some things that government is sitting on, we don’t have money to do them and so it makes sense for me to unlock those things as it will bring money to the economy at these difficult times so that we can move forward. I don’t think we have got to the stage where we say it’s this or that asset. The conversation now should be: should we just keep borrowing, or now that things have got to this stage, we should start to dislodge some under-utilized assets. And it’s not exclusive to us, Saudi Arabia is selling some of its oil assets. So if you sell an asset and use it to finance another asset which is going to give you more, then I don’t have a problem with that. The infrastructure challenges we face are so serious and the kind of money that we need, we can’t borrow because when you have an accumulated deficit, you need to look for the money that will sustain what you are doing for the next three to four years. So, that is what we are looking at and having a more strategic approach so that, over time, we will borrow less, which, of course, is good in the long run,’ She revealed ways in which the assets can be sold. ‘‘The investor will need to look at the risk and pricing accordingly. We can sell to the Nigerian people or the pension fund and you can also list these assets on the stock exchange. So there are different types of sales,’’ she said

I am not saying she is 100% right but come on she is making sense too. we can't continue borrowing when we r running a deficit already. if ese assets are underutilized den we can lease/sell dem(with a buy back clause) for some years to enable us get back on our feet.the matter should be analyzed critically before any decisions are taken.....

Yorubas and Hausas are now conniving to buy Nigeria.

If we sell national asset to finance 2016 budget then in 2017 we will start slave trade to finance 2017 budget.

This clueless government sat for more than a year doing absolutely nothing to move the economy forward. They intentionally decided to destroy the mainstream economy and then come up with the solution. Guess what, they are targeting the old eastern region because they have seen the handwriting on the wall. Let them go to Zamfara, kanu, sokoto, kaduna, Lagos etc and sell the assets in those areas. The old eastern region should resist any attempt to sell their assets.
This is a goverment that never came to build but to destroy. Let them then tell the public how much looted funds that has been recovered. These are a bunch of incapable and muopic leaders

This is where we get it all wrong. She has been misquoted here and i seriously suggest we look at other publications that are carrying this same issue. First she never said 'it makes sense for me to unlock those things' rather what she said was that "it makes sense for us to unlock those things'. Secondly, oil is not the only thing she is looking at, according to her "Some things that government is sitting on and we dont have money to rehabilitate them". Thirdly, She said "The FG had yet to take a final deceison on which of the countries national assets it would dispose of". She is also against the belief that the FG has concluded plans to dispose of some important national assers such as NLNG, NNPC and refineries"

There are so many other things she talked about, just read punchonline

And lets be matured for once, name calling will get us no where.

Am so afraid with the level of zero thinking of this government! What's happening to the asset sold years back? Tell me one that is doing well after sales ? Madam u are not qualify to be on that sit as a minister of fed. Rep. of Nigeria

Anonymous said...

Are u that convinced dat Ibos are too poor to purchase some of the assets.

Lastborn Usman said...

Madam Minister, your proposed selling of government assets is a totally bankrupt that can't be consider a way forward. In references from the assets sold by the past government,to the best of my knowledge, they're been fund by Federal Government. (e.g, Power). I think is high time we seek Knowledge and support from within and abroad.

When there is economic recession, there are certain projects you don't embark on. Forget about railway and non necessities for now. What are you going to sell in 2017? Do not sell our country!

Anonymous said...

Lets be real, some of this so called country's assets are just lying there wasting away. Check out the Third Mainland Bridge, despite it been the longest bridge in Africa, its almost near dead and abandoned. If we have tolls on that bridge, it would help maintain the bridge. Our national Stadium is a disgrace, so are our national monuments they are near dead. So whats the point in keeping them?

The three fools leading economic team are just completely daft and are still collecting salary( kemi , OUT! Yemi vp ( biggest ode ) OUT! And lastly the greatest mumu to ever head our cbn, emefiele OUT!

It is the policies u make that kept them unused, the best thing is to lease Aso rock to the white, let them manage it for a term and observe change

Buhari has misplaced priority. Instead of putting our already scarce resources in good use, is buying drones to kill niger-deltans and biafrans, also searching for the same oil that has doomed us in the north.
