Photos: Nigerian Doctor suspended for making sexual comments while examining female patients in Canada

A Canadian medical tribunal has found Nigerian doctor, Adekunle Williams Owolabi(pictured above), guilty of all four professional misconduct complaints lodged against him and ordered that his license to practice be suspended for six months. The tribunal heard of how Owolabi made sexual comments to some of his female patients who came to him for medical examination.

At the hearing, one of his victims, Arlene Johnson, testified that when she visited Owolabi for a pelvic examination, he made comments that she believed were sexual. She alleged that after the test, he hugged her and whispered in her ear: "You have a beautiful c--t, does your husband tell you that?"

Another complainant testified that during a pelvic examination, Owolabi asked, "Do you like big ones or small ones?" She said Owolabi made the comments while she was pregnant, undressed from the waist down, and had her feet in stirrups. There were two female secretaries in the room at the time, she said.

The tribunal said Owolabi's inappropriate comments and touching of patients showed a lack of respect for the dignity and privacy of patients, which constituted professional misconduct that is deserving of a sanction. He was given a six-month suspension of his medical licence.

The tribunal ordered that he have a chaperone present when he sees female patients for two years after returning to practice.

In addition, he must take a training course about respecting patients and was ordered to pay $75,000 towards the costs of holding a hearing. After the hearing Owolabi's lawyer Paul Stokes said they are "disappointed with the decision".

This was all an allegation. it happened in the province where i currently studied and yes the doctor was suspended but i heard its all a remove the doctor and that during those medical examinations there was always a female nurse or female doctor present. Now my question is how could he have done all that with another person in the scene. its absurd

He taught he is in Nigeria where doctors has no respect for patients especially the women fold. Go back for training and be trained properly or your licence will be withdrawn.

There are a whole lot of doctors that do worse than this in naij and go scot free.

A female friend once told me of how she went to complain about not seeingher period and the doctor asked her to strip and lay on the bed for examination. she recounted that during the examination she felt very funny, embarrased and disgusted as the doctor was literally fingering her and touching her female parts in manner that was sexual.

I also am aware of a teenager who weent to see a doctor for some complains about abdominal pain and the doctor asked her to strip, she did as instructed thinking he was being professional, only to realise the funny way at which the doctor stared at her and touched her breasts and privates. The doctor also asked questions like if she was sexually active and at the end of the examination he made advances at her.

She was so shocked, ashame and shy she couldn't tell anyone, probably also thinking no one would believe her.

Our female folks (old & young) need to expose these guys who dont respect the dignity of the patient and the ethics of the profession. Animalistic doctors who take advantage of patients.

Hummmmmm! Wonders shall never end. It's very important we know our rights as patients. If a doctor wants to do a vaginal examination for you and he goes in with a finger, he wants to finger you. But if he goes in with two that means he truly wants to examine you. Any doctor who do not have a chaperon has ulterior motivate. We need to be knowledgeable about little things that we take for granted. I am ashamed of that doctor. The present doctor caring for Hillary Clinton is a Nigerian YORUBA man. So what is his problem? A singled eyed man in the land of the blinds.

Hahahaha u nailed it.TribalMARkism indeed. He tinks he is still in Nigeria. All docs shd learn frm these

I think the doctors in Nigeria can also be reported to their association because they have a doctors association in Nigeria where their medical licence can be revoked too. Women should stop keeping quiet. Speek up and report these useless doctors to human rights!!!

Oh please Michael, what racism, you don't know whay Nigerian doctors are capable of, this one thinks he's still in Nigeria where doctors act inappropriately and get away with it. My husband is a doctor and he practiced in Nigeria before we relocated to he UK where he now practices and I can authoritatively tell you most of our doctors are not professional when it comes to women. He deserves what is coming to him, infact let them seize his licence permanently. I'm sure if he where in naija he'll be fingering and raping women all in the name of medical examination, smh

That was how i had ordinary cough and one useless young doctor in Lagos asked me to stripped off completely. So i argued with him because i know my rights. I said that it is ordinary cough na, why should i remove all my clothes just for him to examine my chest? He now said if i dont want to strip completely, i should leave so i left and looked for a hospital that had a female doctor. The female doctor didnt even ask me to take off anything. So i told her that i was ask to strip in the previous hospital i went to. She said i should have reported the doctor to the appropraite authorities but i just let the matter die. Some male doctors are just useless. They are not professionals at all

Stupid man with stupid ugly marks all over his face, wonder how a white woman would want to see this kind doctor in the first place , looking like an occultic doctor, the ones that kill pregnant women and children. How he even passed exams to become doctor and got license baffles me.

made news because of his behaviour and not because of his profession
Nigerian doctors in diaspora are doing great, it's unfortunate that he did what he did.
It could have been a Canadian male doctor, so please don't generalise about doctors.

I feel him, some female patients are Randy too. It takes two to tango. Knowing where he is practising, am sure that he must constantly remember professionalism. This must be a gang up. God will be with you in this trying moment. Please leave that province. You will prosper, be very careful and more careful next time.

Hmm! There's always 2 sides to a story. As for me I don't believe. He cud not have said all that with female nurses or doc around him. It's d zero tolerance for anything related to women or children that got him skinned. Prhps there's smoke but this aftermath can never b d fire... But who knows!!!

Never take side until u can hear from both sides.....Its not about being Nigerian, its more about individuals.Let us celebrate our own and be proud of our own....let us also speak out against all sense of impunity, but lets us do so in the spirit of fairness and justice after we must have verified all the facts! !!!

Take it slow bro....When a woman lays a complain against a man in this part of the globe, especially a black man, believe me, you are deemed guilty even before thorough investigations would have been conducted...Women and children are so powerful that when your word is taken out of context, you are guilty. ...It so difficult to help your neighbours because you are scared your good intentions could go south....Dont lets be quick to condemn our own....Remember the stanford student case, he was released after 3months .Just 3months!!!! A black man wouod have served the full sentence of btw 8-15years for having intercourse with an unconscious female....Black man in Europe, America and all over the world needs to be thrice as careful and cautious than a white man!!!!! It is the reality! !!! Our progress and breakthroughs take a longer time to be recognized and published compared to the rate at which our shortcomings are published... think deeply and wisely before you castigate any blackman, especially Africans outside the shores of African Continent, of any allegations levelled against them....speaking from experience....Correct me if wrong, have you ever heard of a white man be wrongly convicted of a crime on death row? Compare that to the numbers of black men that have been????.....Enough said!!!!!

Lol!

Linda, Pls publish my write up.
I had similar experience and I reported the case to a friend who had doctors who are consultants and d case was picked up.
Any woman who has been or was sexually abused by any doctor can always write straight to there medical college. I promise u actions will b taken.

Anyone who has ever been outside the shores of the African continent will understand how the white man looks at and perceives very brilliant and progressive black men. From my own experience and knowledge, I'll not be quick to cast the stone against this young man. I know how very careful all our boys, especially doctors, out here in Canada and Europe are because of litigation in medical practice. I've practiced here in Canada for more than 10years and in that time, I've met terrible white women during my practice but I've always guarded myself with strong chaperones and kept official records of all that transpired because of situations such as this one. I'm sure, and my gut tells me so, that this young man is a victim in this saga. I'm yet to hear his side of the story but it's really heartbreaking for me to read all the hurtful words above which our brothers and sisters back home in Nigeria have heaped on this young man. Nigerian doctors are constantly breaking grounds and "belittling" their white counterparts in knowledge and practice here in Canada, and it's heart-rending to read what my own people are saying against their very own just because of a possible gangup. God help us!
