We don't need 36 state governors and their deputy- Sanusi calls for natioanal restructuring

Emir of Kano, Sanusi Muhammad II, has called for the restructuring of Nigerians system of governance, arguing that Nigeria cannot afford 36 state governors and deputy governors in the face of this economic hardship.

Sanusi said this while speaking at the inaugural lecture and launching of a N250 million endowment fund for the Oba Sikiru Adetona Professorial Chair in Governance, Department of Political Science, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State, yesterday March 10th.

"If you really reflect on the problems of this country, it seems to turn common sense on its head. You sometimes wonder if anyone needs to tell any group of people that if you are a poor country, you do not need 36 governors, 36 deputy governors, with members of house of assembly, commissioners and advisers, Special assistants, a president, a vice president, 36 ministers, special advisers, federal legislature and so on. Simple arithmetic will tell you that if you have that structure, you are first of all doomed to spending 80 or 90 per cent of everything you earn maintaining public officers.
It is really common sense but it seems to be a problem for us to understand it,” he added.

He wants a situation where a fulani or Hausa man can be the governor of two other states combined. I disagree. Indigenes of a state should be allowed to govern a state.

STERN said...

So if you don't need 36 states..then biafarans should be allowed to be on their own.. at least that will reduce the number of states in Nigeria..Not supporting biafra BUT that is what it ends up being.

San usi.....on what platform do you have the right to suggest this? You want a situation where any NigeriaN of a different tribe will rule another tribe in a different state?

I swear, this is a real 'common sense' argument. We need to cut down on a lot. The ruling/system is already chopping toooooo much money. How can one man (Senate President) spend 300 million on cars, and on his way to spending a billion naira on a house and we don't have money in the country. SMH! We really need a restructuring. Even Buhari needs to reduce the number of people he takes along with him on his trips.

Nah I don't share your opinion sir.Nigeria is a heterogeneous country which means equal representation must come to the fore come what may if we are to maintain peace in the country. 36 state governors is a must but the numerous advisers & all is what I think should be scrapped.Duplication of offices is one problem that is gulping money in this country.
In my state alone, I won't be surprised to see SAs like special adviser on Domestic affairs, etal. Its sickening.Instead of reducing the the number of state Governors, why not scrap some redundant offices under em.

This statement is the truth and nothing but the truth. How viable are the states to have such large number of officials and how much is left to carter for health needs, education, water and good roads. Common sense that makes sense. Well said. Also, when this man was querying the disappearance of huge amount of money in the Government Coffers, many people did not believe him, but today, we can all agree that he was making common sense.

True talk Sanusi. God bless you for that observation but please tell Buhari to also cut down on the traveling. $2billion for each trip!!! THIS ALONE CAN CAUSE A REVOLUTION.

Anonymous said...

Exactly what I have been telling my friends. Most states are not viable and can't generate enough revenue to keep afloat without federal government allocation.

The best thing would be cancel out all the states and have the 6 geo-political zones. With zonal govenous. Restructure the local government merging some to make them bigger and viable.

But alas the politicians would never agree as this would reduce the number of public offices and they would play the ethnic and religious card to divide the populace

I think this man makes sense. With everything going on right now - no electricity, no good road network, no economic headway, no budget, we cannot but have a rethink about our system of governance. 36 governors, deputy governors, elaborate legislators, personal assistants, special advisers, etc the nation is doomed. This is a recession.. simple..

The entire system will not be collapsed for reason of austerity. I think right seizing the entire government structure to meet prevailing economic reality is the only way out.

Asoge Atelier said...

To even think this assertion is comin from sanusi, it's a shame. Same former CBN governor who said and I quote during the town hall meeting for or against fuel subsidy on AIT live that "I do not remember the last time I queue for petrol at a filling station " a man who does not know the stress masses pass through to get petrol has something to say about governance? Smh(shame!) to even think he was the governor of CBN and during his time one could not boast of dollars dropping in favour of naira. The problem of Nigeria lies not in scrapping political post alone it lies in diversifying our economy. Reducing posts won't do anything. Those who will steal will still steal. Scrapping it is synonymous to scrapping civil service (the middle class ; that bridge the gap between the "haves" and "have nots". Any leader who does that is not wise bcos that means that the rich will be getting richer and the poor getting poorer. Hence the poor will start kidnapping or probably assainating the rich because the frustration will be too much. If our political officer holders who are expected to serve the masses did what is right the more they are the better their services but political office is now seen as gold mine not service to humanity or masses. RATHER than cut political offices, let FG make it less attractive then it's only those who wants to serve the masses that will be seen. " so Mr. Sanusi this your assertion is totally off it. I respect the Office of the Emir of Kano so much but Mr. Sanusi? Mbanu!!!

It's not the 36 state governors and their deputies we don't need; in fact, we need the governors, deputies and the entire state executive councils for good administration. What we don't need, however, are the 36 state assemblies, they are useless, rubber stamp bodies whose impact on their constituencies is almost zero. Let's only have regional assemblies who will make laws for only their regions for affective administration and to cut waste.

Every state generates their own revenue which should take care of itself, although in Nigeria it is all put together and then shared to various states, with the various allocation figures to states, what the hell does he mean by that....Yes I understand d need to cut down expenditures, but you need people to govern states, America we like to copy has governors and mayors and all kinds of aides and the revenue the state makes looks after its ownself, thus the United "states" of America , this is just outrightly a ploy in motion...

Unknown said...

Really.the onus simply depends on proper decentralization of the so called or created heterogeneous states to strictly depend on their generated revenues internally and less dependent on the central control FG to enhance a healthy competition amongst them. Grants and allocations from the FG should be less emphasized on as it always becomes an easy share in their booty among themselves without actually utilising it for the purposes for which they are intended. Nigerians are actually waiting for this to take place. Thank you.
