Na today????? still happens especially in surulere. Took us 6 months to get an apartment because not only was the cost too high (1.300mil to 1.5mill 3 years ago).. they make you apply by filling a form...once you completed the form and they saw an ibo name they would tell you that you are not qualified because you are ibo! it was soooo depressing. We are currently house hunting and we are hearing the same thing. Landlords telling you out rightly that you do not qualify cos you are ibo. There is a house on Johnson street off Bode Thomas that has a no Igbo policy. Mtseeew.

Yeeeeeeeeeesu! Lagos of all places? it's moments like these that stops me from blaming those vying for a break up! What rubbish is dat? I don't know what's wrong with some folks sef in this life we only stumbled upon not by our own power! How backward can someone be? Shebbi ur tribe people will die alongside you when ur time comes? Odeeeeeee! I'm so pissed right now. Such cases must not be treated with kids gloves at all. Tribalistic Landlords not just in Lagos but around the whole nation if indeed we are to remain together must be dealt with severely to deter others. We can never grow to become the great economic black nation we are hoping for in this footsteps. Gaaaawwwwd!

Oh yes Linda. I had same experience 2 months ago. Had my complete money to pay bt landlord refused to collect cos I'm igbo. #tboy#

Igbo don't like paying rent, they will pay you two years first, that will be the last rent, they will stay 4 years, landlord will extra money trying to get them out.

If he wants only Yoruba, let him wait for Yoruba peeps, by the time his house dey empty for years except it's face me I slap you he go understand., I'm not saying Yorubas don't rent flats, I'm saying there are large number of other tribes in Lagos almost as large as Yoruba community, and majority of that Yoruba community has houses in Lagos and won't be renting shit. So let him wait for ghost Yoruba to come rent his houses .

Anonymous said...

yes oooo no be only you. infac t the moment they realsie you are ibo or benin or anywhere near the eastern part of nigeria, the rent is jacked up in other to dissuade you while some will outrightly tell you they dont rent house to ibos and benin people.

Yes it does happen because the world know ibos are the most terrible tenants you can ever have. we are still fasting and praying for the dickhead ibo tenant we have here to pack out after 2 yrs of refusing to pay rent.

Goaldyn Boy said...

Ha! Ha! It is very common in Lagos nah! Yorobas are the most tribalistic set of specie in the world when it comes to letting their property out! And they are the worst set of people to have as a tenant! A Yoruba landlord will prefer his tribesman that cannot pay his rent as at when due than another tribe that can be paying him promptly! The worst part is that whether you are from Edo, Niger delta or efik; all of you are bundled as omo igbo!!!

Anonymous said...

Yes i agreed..my dad's property was rented to a family of (5)..but 20 people were living in the flat.(3 bedroom flat).igbo people can accomodate o.........

In a land that was developed with Niaja Delta oil money, former FG capital and invested heavily upon by people from other state. Imagine if Lagos was purely developed by Yorubas alone, what they would had done. Tribalism runs in their blood.

It's better to avoid the devil ... Ibo tenants are terrible. Some of them will pay the first year and refused to pay for other years. Omo if u rent ur house to them nah one chance u enter oo

I don't blame the man, the house directly opposite mine the landlord had to chase all of them, with a story of he wants to sell his house, cos its a mess, b4 he took other tenant the had to do serious renovation. Nd abt 2 oda houses on my street, and also my anty's house, am sorry to say Ibos r dirty nd deh use houses anyhow cos its not theirs. I got a shop nd for one year it was locked cos d bastard ibo guy dah used d shop locked 4 close to 2years nd stopped payin rent 2years b4 locking d shop.

So how does that explain the refusal of all other non yoruba tenants? Tribalism is wrong on every level.

Please I don't blame the landlords. Yoruba men are responsible when it comes to paying rent. Ibo man pays first year rent and then becomes a nuisance till they take the roof off the house.

I'm Igbo and I can understand why landlords in Lagos do that. It's not good to generalize but that is what happens when a few bad eggs spoil the bunch.

of course it still happens!my advice for anyone looking to rent apartment is, start out early..say about 6months. some landlords dint accept me cos am single, some cos i work in a bank, some cos of tribe but i eventually got a fantastic place with my landlord living in there. he never asked for marital status or tribe. i believe it all depends on individual personality.

I am a landlord and i am sorry to say this but i don't like ibos. They pay their rent and all that but they tend to come in 10"s. you rent out to a couple then you find he has brought 3 cousins and she has 2 cousins too. They will run down your house while they build theirs in lekki, then move out and leave the house to another brother and the cycle starts again. so , NO, i don't rent to ibo

Is ur Yoruba pple that always complain about expensive house rent, they prefer to go and pay for one room apartment at abule Egbe, agbado jaiye, sango wt about 6 children including their parent, very dirty, tribalistic fools.

Anonymous said...

That's bcos u pple don,t travel out of ur territories, laziness runs inside una blood.come to onisha my bro has a Yoruba tailor that show all his native wears and we treat him like every other person,he even speaks Igbo.idiot go out and see for itself.

Anonymous said...

Yes, because Ibos owe house rent a lot. The stay in your house after the 1st rent they paid expires without thinking of paying and they don't know how to maintain and keep the house clean. Plus you will rent house to one person and 20 people will end up leaving in the apartment

Shugar Ugah said...

The reason for landlords not allowing igbos is simple a Yoruba man will live 20years in ur house an Igbo man will live 2ys n build his own house...those landlords need a long time customer...

Anonymous said...

Yep!!! Landlord once told us while looking for a place to rent that Igbo people will pay whatever you charge for the initial rent but after that will never drop a penny and will take you to court for like forever and bring tons of people to live with them. Said he had experienced it before.Sad

Agwu Ejem said...

Had a similar, or even worse, experience just past January. My wife and I were looking for an accommodation around Egbeda and Surulere areas because of their proximity to our work places. On several occasions, we found places that matched our tastes but the agents told us bluntly that unfortunately the landlords of those houses do not want Igbo tenants. On one occasion, i got so angry and i asked the agents whats wrong with being Ibo in Lagos. He said its only an instruction from the landlord. On another occasion, we paid the rent and agent fees; only be told about 2 hours later that the landlord has asked us to come and get our money back. He reason, we were told, is that we paid for only one year instead of two. I didnt believe that cus he was aware we wanted to pay for one year. At the end of the day, we got the rent, and didnt get all the agent fees. Well as God may have it, we eventually got a better accommodation that is owned by an Igbo man. All things worked together for good, sha.

These stereotypes particularly coming from the yorubas is very deciding in their relations towards the 'omo Igbos'....i'm a victim of such, but trust me, I give it back to my landlady in full coin. These landlord/landlady especially if you're igbo will want to treat you like an alien and will treat your fellow yoruba co-tenants perfectly well. In a compound where there arises the need to make a particular contribution for something, they all(the yorubas) will have a meeting and exempt you and later come to tell you at the last minute to pay up. In such (and many other) cases I don't dare pay, they will only rant and that's all. You dare not evict me otherwise we'll meet in court, and they sure knows what that meant. Shikena.
