Question of the day

Here's an excerpt from LIB's Exclusive Interview with 5.0 CGPA Graduate of Unilag, Ayodele Daniel Dada..
' When I did the UTME Exam, I believed that I had done well. There are exams you write and you are certain of your performance. I went as far as taking my scripts home and cross checking with textbooks and other sources (also online). I knew for a fact that there was no way I could score below 300/400.
But then Low and behold, I got a message when I was trying to check the result, that my result was cancelled because I must have cheated in the exam. I was Devastated and I felt so sad and I just thought - Okay, What do I do? I had to complain. I had to get people to just plead my case, visit the office and get feed back on what was the next step to take to rectify the situation.
It was stretching on and on & I didn't really fancy that long winding process. So I tried to figure out what the next option was. Some people just felt I should do ahead and take the diploma/foundation programme and I did that. But it was difficult because I am not from a rich home. '
How many other Intelligent people has Jamb left devastated by cancelling their result? Share your experiences.

I got a 298 in jamb, and my result was cancelled because they felt I cheated. I had to write jamb 3 times and even downgrade myself at the last attempt just to get admission. I finally got admission into a private university with 266 at 18 years.

My result was cancelled in 1997 jamb during era of that man called Salam or whatever he is called. And it delayed my entry into the uni. And I believe I smashed it. Cos I graduated with a 2.1 from the uni.so they thought no human could score like I did

I took my first external exam when I was in SS2 and got all my papers right except Chemistry(which I was never interested in anyways as I was forced against my will to be a science student). I did my SSCE and passed, did POLYJAMB and passed too but my interest was in Arts and Humanities so I enrolled myself in another school for SSCE worked my butt off to pay for school fees and all the other gbogbotigbo that goes with enrolling in a public sec. sch with "hungry lions" as principals. Did tutorials, sch. organized plus self and was one of the few who passed all the papers in that sch that very year. Imagine my frustration when "Almighty JAMB" from 1999 dealt with me till 2005/2006 before I could get admission!
Chai, I suffered. I cried, I was almost suicidal. I wanted nothing but to gain admission as I was wasting away and my folks were barely getting by not to talk of having money for me to learn some gainful handiwork. In those seven years, I woke up on most birthdays crying my eyes out as my lil cousins n siblings were gaining admission and finishing school. I remember going from pillar to post trying to challenge JAMB over" result withheld" blablablaa because they felt I had cheated. Almost lost my legs in a bike accident on one of the occasions. GOD punish JAMB if they refuse to refine this BS process of determining who cheated or not. 7 years set me back in a way that affected everything around me till now. I came out of the university eventually, but because I has spent 7 years at home, most companies I could contribute to deemed me too old for their vacant positions.mtcheew

The fact that some of these Examination institutes do not believe in the brilliance of Nigerian students is quite disheartening. Isn't it their job to ensure that there 's no iota of exam malpractice? JAMB does that a lot.

Mine was Waec. It was released after 5years when I was almost graduating from the university. Those examination boards can frustrate someone's life jare. Ppl will come out with good grades n still be hustling to get a good job after spending so much in the University, reading, buying handouts, n all the stress. Our country socks. I know of two siblings their parents sold their house here in lagos just to train them in school. People mocked them, but they needed best for their children. Now they hv graduated for the past 5years no job. You think those parents won't be regretting their actions? Well e go better. That's why I like Yoruba ppl. Is either going to school or learning skills. at least if school no work u go use your hand work chop.

Dear Linda,

This is beyond JAMB. This is the attitude of a lot of people in the older generation towards young minds. You are too young, you are too inexperienced, what do you know?! Young people are too often stepped over for the very reason they should be embraced. While in the University, I encountered several lectures who would say you that "A is for God, B is for me and you can have a C". Effectively judging and scoring you before an exam. And they apply this "you can never do so well" yardstick to a lot of young people.

Today's world often does not give young people the chances they need, the tutelage and guidance needed for the of benefit humanity. Self-help is the order of the day. That is why crime and pseudo-prostitution is on the rise. Hard-work is not as valuable as it once was and instant gratification is the order of the day. Brilliant minds are shut down simply because they don't conform to norms or stereotypes.

The truth is a lot of "advanced nations" have been through this phase, but we have not as a Nation learnt from their experience. We need a meritorious system and same should be institutionalized across board. #IcelebrateAyodele.

This reminds me of the story of WAEC asking for processing fees for the top students that an agency wanted to award scholarship. This country can be frustrating most times. You struggle to go to school, graduate and can't get a job. To start a business isn't that easy as the funds aren't readily available. Why won't the best brains keep leaving to seek greener pastures? I bet you if Dr Omalu hadn't left Nigeria, he wouldn't have discovered Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) and if the 5 pointer could afford to school abroad, he would have left after his result was cancelled. We are really our own problems in this country. Even the university lecturers are usually intimidated by brilliant students. May God intervene in our country.

in 2012 I scored 274 (jamb)&260(pume) for unn law. I wasn't admitted so I applied for their supplementary admission with the same score under combined social sciences.. Still no show 2014 251 for unizik psychology, no show. I left for houdegbe last year out of frustration

I didn't finish reading the first article. I stopped at where he said "I convocated" it's "convoke" Mr.Dada.
As for where the system failed me, I've gone for so many interviews where I did extremely well, but no appointment cause I'm not well connected.

Olugbenga Boluwaji Ajayi said...

I got the same treatment in 2003; in my mind I was expecting a very high jamb score but jamb had other plan, the result was withheld and later canceled. Went to jamb office several times and nothing changed and I was really demoralized, registered for another jamb with poor motivation, the preparation was nothing close to what I did the last time, fortunately I was able to make just enough to pass. Thank God, now am a Pharmacist.
Is not everyone that is that fortunate.
The system has to be reformed to benefit the just and brilliant, rather than punish them.

God bless the FGN

Jamb killed my cousin. Mikel was the most brilliant boy. He was so smart that his school encouraged him to write SSCE in SS1 and he made straight As. When he wrote Jamb after SS3, they kept on seizing his result until he became depressed. He never recovered. He developed mental issues as a result of the depression and died at 21. His family couldn't afford diploma or part time programmes. And there were no private universities them I am so bitter right now. A genius died as a result of incompetence.

JAMB is really jamming people and their destinies!

My daughter wrote the exams yesterday after rigorous readings and almost 20km travel for lessons everyday. She would leave 6am and return 7pm daily from the lesson. And she always has assignments

Then the SHOCKER: She got to the exam hall yesterday and Economics was registered for her instead of IRS! She was disheveled. When the result came out, she got 213. As I write this she's battling headache and nausea- which she never had.

JAMB can kill, but my daughter will survive this
