Ocholi's driver: FRSC insist fake driver's licence is no licence

Bisi Kazeem, Head, Media Relations and Strategy, Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), has insisted that late James Ocholi’s driver, Taiwo James Elegbede had no driver’s license record with the commission.

Kazeem stated this Abuja on Sunday, March 13 in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria. According to him, the news making round in the social media that Elegbede, driver of the ill-fated vehicle that claimed the lives of Ocholi and his family members has a driver’s license is not true.
"Elegbede is not captured in our driver’s licensing data, so the license he claimed to have expired must be a fake one. Our license procedure includes physical presence and biometric capturing of applicants which is permanently stored in our data bank, for the purpose of verification. We always tell members of the public to visit our licensing centres spread across the country and desist from patronizing touts while applying for their driver’s license. Elegbede can not be called a competent driver if he does not have a genuine driver’s license, which he can only acquire showing mastery of basic driving principles.

Reacting to the claim that the vehicle(Lexus 570 SUV) the driver was driving was one given to Ocholi from the office of the Head of Service and that he wasn't allowed to examine the car, Kazeem said:

"A good driver must perform a routine check on his vehicles before driving out, it is not an excuse to say because the vehicle was provided by another office and he should ignored a check on it. Infact, the maintenance department could not claim in-culpability as a result of receiving the vehicle from another agency or department, the more reason, why proper check should be carried out as the vehicle is changing hands."

Kazeem said the commission while wishing Elegbede a speedy recovery, urged members of the public to only engage the service of a genuinely licensed driver to avert road carnages.

James Ocholi, his wife and a son died in an accident along Kaduna-Abuja Highway on Sunday,March 6, while the driver and the Orderly sustained serious injuries.

LIB recalls that Elegbede's colleagues at the transport department of the Ministry of Labour and Employment had earlier debunked the claim that he had no license saying that Elegbede is a licensed driver who had served the ministry for over 25 years. They said Elegbede's driver's license expired on January 15th 2016 and he had applied for another one.

So are they saying that they issue driver's licenses to ONLY competent drivers? Lie Lie people
Why would the ministry employ him without verifying his license?

What difference does it make whether he has a driver's license or not? I stand to be corrected but does FRSC (an organisation I tremendously admire by the way) conduct driving tests before issuing the licenses? As far as I know, any 'mai ruwa' can walk in and get his license as long as he has the license fees.

SongsOfSUSSAN said...

Aside FRSC, is there any other government body saddled with the responsibility of issuing driver's license?
I think the FRSC has just revealed that they have been issuing FAKE DRIVER'S LICENSES to Nigerians. EFCC please, look into this.

So is FRSC telling us now to ask Drivers for their driving licence before boarding a taxi? What exactly do they do on our roads? Extort money? Something isn't just right with their mundane method of checkmating crime. They should come up with something else

why ponder about "Ocholi's driver and the fake FRSC driver's license" the FRSC should as a matter of urgency do the needful. There are lots of fakes of every thing concerning FRSC!! But i tell you FRSC isn't organised!!! poor database and so much fraud.car plate numbers given by FRSC are seen as fake...car registrations...

Mr Bisi Kazeem, how many of us with valid drivers license are properly tested at the point of getting the drivers license rather your staff(FRSC) are busy collecting bribe.Even if his name is on your database, was he properly tested before given a drivers license? How many Dafo drivers are with drivers license and can't drive properly or don't know road sign. Abeg, your argument hold no waters.

First of all, I have an original drivers license and I can't even turn a car key to make it start. Only got it as a valid means of identification. FRSC, corruption has eaten so deep in your system and bribes exchange hands every minute in your offices. Also, it is on record that a high ranking staff of FRSC said that almost 90% of drivers I'd's including those issued by you guys are fakes.

Anonymous said...

so people with valid driver's licence never have accidents or wot? all these blame games will never bring the Ocholis back so pls dey shud just take several seats

optimisticlady said...

Didn't the said driver die in this same accident?
Is it he human?
Of course not.
He is just a common driver...
The lives of the ocholis were worth more than his.

It's a pity that the family was wiped out but why is the driver suddenly been criticized?the so called road safety and police have forgotten about the countless lives that have been lost on Nigerian roads. Is it because he's a minister?those that have lost their lives on Nigerian roads are human beings also and we are equal in the eyes of God.It might have been a mistake on the part of the driver or maybe the vehicle wasn't even serviceable and was put on the road.I feel that the driver shouldn't be completely criticized.Drivers license or none is not the issue at hand. These guys are just deviating from the main issue.Has any one of them cared to interview the driver and hear his side of the story?

Nice post regarding fake driver's license. I don’t want to buy fake a license. Rather than buying it, will prefer getting professional driving training from a local Port Macquarie Driving School and then passing the test.
