Lekki Gardens releases statement on the collapse of one of their buildings

Read the press statement below...
The Management of Lekki Gardens has confirmed the unfortunate incident, Tuesday March 8th 2016 where a building collapsed at about 4a.m. in the morning, at one of its residential estate projects in Lekki. The building which was under construction was meant to house a number of apartment units.
Rescue work started immediately and so far 18 people have been reported dead and others injured. The exact cause of the incident is not known at this time. All of our incident response procedures have been initiated, our support services have been mobilized and relevant authorities have been advised. As regards the said building, investigations are being carried out to ascertain the cause of the collapse. In line with our usual safety standards, all sites are closed off by 6pm daily and it is mandatory that every worker leaves at that time.

The company is cooperating with the National Emergency Management Agency, Lagos State Government, Fire Service and Lagos State Police to speed up rescue efforts. Investigation is already underway to ascertain the identities of those affected as it is not company policy for site workers to take shelter in uncompleted buildings.

Lekki Gardens is a reputable residential property development company and has successfully completed and delivered over 6,000 units of houses across Lagos, Ogun, Rivers State and the Federal Capital territory, Abuja in the past 4 years and most of them already occupied. The Management and staff of Lekki Gardens sincerely sympathize with the families of those who lost their lives. The company will do all in its power to ensure that those injured are fully supported.

Signed Management, Lekki Gardens

Integrity checks should be carried out on all their sites ans structures. Govt agencies in charge of standard should be above board and ensure that sub standard materials are not used in building construction. Most of the mass housing projects I have seen in Nigeria are shams and day light robbery of subscribers. May the Lord rest the soul of the dead victims, heal the wounded and console the survivors and their relations in Jesus name.#righteousnessexaltsanation.

I hope the Lagos State Government will also sue Lekki Gardens for using sub-standard materials for building.

Lekki Gardens should get ready to start returning people's money. I foresaw this long ago with the substandard materials used in building.

This is just a lame and senseless press release. They should cover their faces in shame. If a building could collapse when it is unoccupied, it would even collapse faster when it is fully occupied. That shows the extent to which safety and standards have been thrown to the winds in the quest for profit. They are even using the misfortune to advertise themselves, listing all the cities where they have more of their death traps, what guts!!!
I recommend as follows:
*The mgt of Lekki gardens should be charged to court for the loss of lives in that building, regardless of their legitimacy of its habitation
*Their license to operate real estate in Nigeria should be revoked
*The authorizing government body should be held to explain why the building was allowed to continue if standards are not adhered to.

Building collapse can be caused by the use of substandard materials, inefficient / unqualified civil engineers / builders or unauthorized adjustments of original architectural designs. My concerns is how could a reputable company like Lekki Gardens become a victim of this disastrous event, let the authorities go after these people, the structural engineer, material purchasing officer, supervisory engineer on site, the safety officer in charge and the workers foreman within these group of people lies the true cause of the collapse

Anonymous said...

Shut up. How can u say u do not know the cause of the collapse? It is because you used inferior materials to build the house or because the foundation was not layed properly. These are the only two reasons that can cause a building to collapse or maybe na juju. I can never trust a Nigerian to built my house. By God's grace, Labanese, Isrealese or notable companies like Julius Berger will build my house for me.

Wow...thank God I am in construction. I went to lekki gardens new estate on chevron drive last time I was in Nigeria. I was shocked at the poor quality of the job ad they were asking for 28 million naira just for the shell. I actually told the sales lady that they need to sack the contractor because I could see so many flaws it was ridiculous. God have mercy on those who lost their lives.

The Tales of a Fallen Garden

The demand for shelter is growing rapidly in the metropolis of Lagos. This surge is felt more in the high brow corridors of Lekki Peninsula. Ironically, this entire region was abandoned for many decades as the cost of putting up two structures there can build three in the dry mainlands.

This axis was said to have gained prominence when the then Governor of Lagos state, ALHAJI Lateef JAKANDE did the unimaginable by undertaking a very ambitious project right at the heart of Lekki beach now popularly known as JAKANDE Estate (Low cost Mass Housing).

Another former Lagos Governor, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu also followed suit. He pulled a lot of infrastructural based investments to that axis more than a decade ago, most of which are still visible till date.

In the last two decades, the LEKKI - Epe corridor has become the destination for those who want to establish some level of societal affluence. This has also attracted some key players in the Real Estate cycle as well as many novice and charlatans who are hitherto petty business men and women. People who do not see the need for quality construction but view the industry only on the scale of Naira and Kobo.

I am personally touch by the recent 5-storey building collapse in Lekki because I visited that site some months ago as well as the other sites being built by the same developer. I told those around me that these buildings are structurally unsafe. They couldn't agree more. In my last article on building collapse, I mentioned that if after the hullabaloo, no decisive action is taken by relevant authorities, more buildings may hit ground zero.

It is alleged by former sub contractors that this developer stands multiple floors of building with concrete mix of (1:3:6) for columns and beams. It is also alleged that structural integrity is usually violated like a serial killer rapes and murders his victim. All these, to cut corners and save cost so that unsuspecting buyers, mostly the diaspora community, can get a chance to buy two and get one free. This is a case of reducing real estate to petty tomato sale.

I rest my case here until we receive yet another breaking news of a building collapse elsewhere in the Metropolis of greed.

Dear Lagos or whatever you call yourself... You are simply an extreme embarrassment of a human being. It's clear where your grievances lie. It's either you were gunning for him and he didn't bat an eyelid in your direction or you were fired based on extremely poor performance or misconduct . Keep your cheap stinking lies to yourself...looking for a minute of fame to make your stupid self feel good? Go elsewhere... If you really know Richard like you claim to, then may Almighty God punish you endlessly for spreading these cheap lies about him.

If he was ever a blessing to you in any form then let the heavens rise up against you, let the earth reveal your iniquities... Let your prayers become sin and let your heavens become brass. Unless he was never a blessing to you. Mr Richard is an extremely wonderful person with a large heart that loves people and treats his staff very well. He doesn't deserve all this crap

their buildings always collapse, this is not the first time. just that this time around there's casualties. stupid Richard (the CEO) always using fake and cheap material.

Anonymous said...

@ Anon, Thank youooooo.
Serious business, person go carry personal prejudice come, na waa for the Lagos.
May the soul of the departed rest in peace.
Richard has a good vision, and come to think of it even fed non-Nigerians.
The company has a lot of work to do to redeem image and make sure such incidence don't occur again especially hiring the best hands.

Anonymous said...

I learnt that work has already been halted on the same collapse building for some months due to the defect that was noticed but homes-less people were using it for shelter. Guess they ran in there for shelter when the rains started. May their humble souls rest in peace.

Anonymous said...

Richard is a man that have a strong passion to help people. He can not afford to see people suffer. He pays Engineers to do their jobs. The engineers should be held responsible for this.

Anonymous said...

Oh this should not happen to this nice and great man yet very humble and has a great vision to provide houses to millions of people. He is one in a million.

Bad contractors must be responsible for this mess.

Why is this world like this?

May the souls of those poor people who took shelter there rest in peace.

Richard Nyong is a good man. A good citizen of Nigeria with good intentions for the Nigerian community. Everyone is putting blames on Lekki Gardens but do we know that no one will want to start a business and watch it collapse and crumble like that. The company came with good intentions but unfortunately an unforeseeable incident happened. We should support the affected parties and stop the blame game.

Tweegy said...

Richard Nyong is a nice guy with a good heart. People who have come in contact with him or associated with him will tell you this. As the CEO he takes responsibility for what happened since its his company but in truth Lekki Gardens never positioned this to happen.
Unforeseeable circumstances like this can happen to any company or organization. We should stop the talk that they use substandard products. Houses collapse due to different factors and this is just one case of such.
Lets protect and promote the image of Richard Nyong and the company Lekki Gardens because they deserve commendation for what they have done in their short time in the real estate industry.
