Foreign airlines to sack 2000 Nigerian workers due to CBN rules on Forex and funds transfer

The National Union of Air Transport Employees, NUATE,  revealed that foreign airlines are planning to sack about two thousand Nigerian employees due to the CBN International rule on restrictions of Forex and funds transfer which prevents them from transferring their salaries to their respective home countries to take care of basic needs.

In a letter which was addressed to the Minister of State for Aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika and made available to newsmen, Acting General Secretary of NUATE, Comrade Olayinka Abioye said if this happens, a lot of Nigerians would be jobless and be thrown back into the labour market which is already full. He added that if these employees are sacked, the airline industry will also suffer because there would be a shortage of workers. He asked for the Federal Government to intervene and help the foreign airlines out and save the workers jobs at the same time.

Abioye said:
“The reason being adduced for this danger is that their earnings in the past year is under lock with the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN , as they are unable to transfer these earnings to their respective home countries to meet operational costs in accordance with international rules.”
“Following concerns raised recently by leaders of these workers and other stakeholders and in appreciation of the good intent of the government’s fiscal policy, we humbly make this clarion call for your (Minister) intervention to grant foreign airlines concession to repatriate their proceeds to their home countries,” he said.
“We hasten to place on the front burner an emerging threat confronting over 2, 000 private sector aviation workers in Nigeria which requires your intervention to forestall imminent loss of jobs of these number of workers,”.

Is this a threat? Why are they threatening to sack Nigerians just because Nigeria is trying to revive the economy by banning forex. They just want Nigerian economy to be continiously bad so that they can be gaining from the economy while we suffer. To hell with them. Let them sack them. We will employ them by the grace of God. Nonsense threat!

This is blackmail! Does this make sense? You will sack Nigerian's because you can't repatriate your funds??? These airlines are rubbing Nigerian's blind. We have one of the highest airline fares in the world and they are now shouting they can't get their money out. They should leave and see a large chunk of their revenue disappear. Others will jump at taking their spot. Nonsense!!!

femmedy said...

@anonymous 9.05, pls think b4 typing. The cbn governor shouldn't have restricted forex without taking care of the after effect first. If u have brother and sisters in airline sector, I know you won't reason this way. We need to revive our economy truly but it can't be within a matter of months. The government should get it's priorities right and not put the cart b4 d horse. We ain't producing anything , yet they wanna ban importation. Is that a logical reasoning??? Why can't we start production first..once the result is visible and favourable, then we can start discouraging importation by way of increase in tariffs knowingfully well dat there's is substitute.

Anonymous said...

Sharrap! So the funds they generate in naira nko? Can't they use that to pay salaries???? Abegi! They should bounce. How does the non repatriation of funds affect them paying the Nigerians salary? Do they earn salary in dollars?? Hian. Talk with sense abeg

@femmedy...My brother God bless you and your household this year. Almighty God will continue to empower you with wisdom and knowledge so that our beloved country will not be overrun with idiots like Anonymous. It is because of dolts like him that we have the leaders we have today...they vote without thinking and possess not reasoning power.

Anonymous said...

@femmedy can you hear yourself speak? Stop being self-centred, selfish & unreasonable. You are only concerned about the airline sector. What about other sectors of the economy that are suffering like agriculture, power, oil & gas etc? This is total blackmail. These airlines are reaping Nigerians off with very high fares. They pay their Nigerian staff peanuts compared to what they gain from Nigeria. Let them continue with their stupid threats. We are not bothered as long as dollar is dropping. That's what is important.

Anonymous said...

Empty threats.

Anonymous said...

They should go back to their countries to fly planes there. Nigerian will soon start their own airlines and employ staff. Rubbish!

Anonymous said...

After they sack Nigerian staff, we will also ban them from operating in Nigeria. Stupid blackmail

Anonymous said...

These airline businesses have been enjoying from us for too long. They should go to hell while the dollar drops. We are not moved by their threats

Anonymous said...

I will vote for Buhari again and again and again. Those airlines have reaped Nigerians off for too long. Enough is enough!

Linda take note and please if possible send my suggestion to the government and the airlines concern that if the economy of the nation improve those airlines should be given conditions in operating through out air spaces.
If they couldn't bear with the situations of the country economy they should be able to bear the conditions of improving economy of Nigeria.
Moreover Nigeria airways should come back in the space and our people should stop flying foregn airlines to prove them that without them we could survive and nigerians also can travel at their own respect.
Thanks Linda
