We’ll introduce stun guns to replace firearms - IGP Arase, says robbers in Lagos have resorted to kidnapping

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Solomon Arase says that the Nigeria Police Force will soon replace stun guns with firearms as part of efforts to reduce casualties from the misuse of firearms by some police officers. Arase said this while speaking at the Police Commissioners Conference held in Abuja yesterday February 3rd.

"Right now, what we are trying to do is to discourage issuing firearms to police officers, who go on metro patrol. And that is why we are thinking of introducing stun guns this year. Stun guns can incapacitate you, demobilise you, but they will not kill you.

So, in case there is a mistake, then we will be able to ensure that the fatality is not such that will result in death. It is also true that from statistics we have internal mechanisms for dealing with people who engage in misuse of firearms and I must tell you that many of them have been dismissed. But it is not every day you will see it on the pages of the paper that they have been dismissed” he said

While speaking at the conference, Arase also revealed that intelligence gathering by the police revealed that armed robbers in Lagos state have resorted to kidnapping
“We have a new challenge now in Lagos because after we have been able to mop up the bank robbers that come from the waterways, it looks as if they have found a new vocation in kidnapping, especially in Festac and Amuwo Odofin. We are addressing those issues and I can assure you that those people will be caught. It takes time though; you know crime is always committed but the indomitable fighting spirit of the police force has to be strengthened and that is what we are trying to do. Also, the supervisory role of the commissioners of police, divisional commanders, area commanders must be strengthened because I think that is where we are having a gap and I can assure you that we will make sure that we resolve it.” he said

Our security personnel in this nation needs to be well equipped with both physical arms and intelligence criminal capture strategies that top developed countries had imbibe.

"prevention is better than cure" we have been making use of this phrase often and often, it is now time the Nigerian security personnel ensure measures are in place prior to any major attack to the live and properties of the Nigerian citizen.

we hope the IGP will do as promised.

In some cases Stun guns can kill! The root of the matter isnt tackled yet. The law should allow these untrained policemen to be sued and jailed for a lengthy period of time if they harm the innocent citizens. Be it with firearms, stun guns or bats

D robbery rate is too much now

I hope this will help because many police officers are not well mannered, little thing that will happen, you see them shooting and killing innocent citizens just like that.

It is not about replacing firearms. It's all about training the police on how to use their weapons. Stun guns or teasers are also dangerous to health. There are cases where people have lost their lives with stun guns.
The officers need to be assessed mentally and not all officers should be issued weapons. May i ask
1) Are officers who are issued weapons are these weapons accounted for ?
2)Do they know /have records of those that have been given weapons?
3)Do they have records of the magazines given and used by such officers.
4)Magazines used can they be accounted for?
5)When was assessment on the officers done and reviewed?

The government should have a database, where they can retrieve details of those issued, what was issued, those retired, those dismissed and weapons returned etc.Once they have all this in place only then can things get better.

Oga IGP,

How can you say that you have been able to mop-out bank robbers and now they are finding new vocation in kidnaping???

Your statmennt is mileading, how can you mop-out something and the thing still exist?.....
