Senate to Probe DSTV

The Senate has instituted a probe into the activities of DSTV owned by the South African based Multichoice Africa, in Nigeria. At the plenary session yesterday February 24th, the Senators expressed dissatisfaction over the services of the company when Senator Isah Hamma Misau (APC, Bauchi Central) sponsored a motion tagged, " Unwholesome practices of Multichoice Nigeria (DSTV).Misau while moving the motion, accused Multichoice of dominating the Nigerian satellite television market, thereby enabling it to engage in negative and unhealthy practices amongst which are arbitrary increase in subscription charges, refusal to adopt pay 'as-you-use' model applicable in other countries, poor service delivery and absence of toll free lines for customers complaints.

The Senators then mandated the Senate Committees on Information and Trade & Investment to institute a public hearing on the matter and consider summoning the top officials of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) and Consumer Protection Council (CPC) over the issue. Senate President Bukola Saraki said they will continue to safeguard the interest of Nigerian consumers. The two committees were given four weeks to carry out their investigations and report back to the house.

Funny enough in their country since the time of Adam one can watch EPL games on the Compact plan at R319(N4,160) per month and the Explora goes for R1,800(N23,400)
I was surprised to learn that when I visited Sandton Mall in South Africa.

Good move, the extortion from multi choice is alarming..,they dominate the market to enable them increase tariffs with no one checking their fraudulent activities. These South African companies come into Nigeria to bleed us blue of our hard earned money, yet back in South Africa they hate us with passion. The senator that moved the motion against them is brave..change is indeed coming gradually to Nigeria..

Nelly Uwaifo said...

This is a welcome development by the senate it shows they are truly the peoples representative. Nigeria have the largest market for Multi choice Company yet they treat their customers with disdain. We must insist on "pay as you use" as it is done in other countries of the world, as against their monthly subscription method enough of the rip off.

Kudos to you Nigerian Senators this is long over due, those guys have bought NBC, CPC. In a country of over 170m people only Dstv has the right to show English premier league, Spanish league etc. In South Africa Dstv is pay as u consume in Ghana the same with other African Countries. Why is Nigeria case a different case, Nigerians have about this for years, but know government was interested to listing don't ask me why, of course corruption. They should be probed and should made to pay back to Dstv users in the Country for reap off. Thank you Nigerian Senators

If this Senate does this, they will have my vote for life. I have been so pissed over the activities of DSTV. Their monopoly of all major football matches and treating Nigerians any how. Previous govts, starting with Obj turned a blind eye all along because their pockets are always laced. Practically all other Satellite companies go under because of this monopoly. The have to de-centralize the football hosting, to allow other companies to survive.

Very good one coming from the senate, the scam is long due, they repeat movies and increase charges whenever they like and has refused to apply "pay per view" system.
I just wish they can be scrapped and Nigerian channels can merge to have our own national satellite in Nigeria that can cover English Premier League, CNN etc .it's just the staffs that will loose their jobs thats' the problem.

These NASS members are not serious. Didnt Consumer Protection Council just sanction DSTV last week or so on the same issues is what nass is summoning them for. These guys are jokers

Awww common...long overdue....DSTC is fleecing Nigerians with the surreptitious collaboration of NBC. Nigerians do not have leaders that care. Anything and everything goes. Just like PHCN,The regulators collect inducement from the operators and give them a free rein to emasculate hapless consumers. Gos will fight for us.

Anonymous said...

is investigating DSTV a priority for the Senate...?? They had better face their core duties of passing bills and enacting laws instead of wasting time on this. By the way, the govt agency which is mandated to carry out such investigations, the CPC haas already done that and issued instructions to DSTV just last week... What is the senates own again...?? This is just plain duplication, the senators should face the PIB, Budget and other important bills that are before them instead of duplicating the functions of other govt agencies.
My 2cents....

By the way, I'm not supporting DSTV oh... As far as I'm concerned, they should be slammed with an MTN-esque fine...

oh please enough with all the hullabaloo. so with the falling naira, petrol scarcity, crime, no electricity, dwindling economy, insurgency, lack of education... the only thing the senate can do is probe a private company? well guess what? I hope all entrepreneurs and other businesses know that the minute they succeed with doing this, your businesses are next. they will have the right to sanction any business because they can. a company increases their prices because your government devalued the naira and you want to probe them? everything in the country went up in price! even to go and do hair, they'll tell you dollar has gone up. must they go bankrupt because they want to sell? it just annoys me because I have my own business and really, it just takes some customers or a genius in the senate to complain and they get probed.

Anonymous said...

did they steal your money? No, they buy expensive content and re-sell it. do the people in government steal your money?YESSSS!!! they rob you blind. does DStv have the best customer care? ABSOLUTELY NOT! the next customer care person i speak to will hear it. But I heart the CPC has finally woken from their slumber and put some policies in place (LONG OVERDUE).

please Linda, next!!!

and before anyone starts with me, i pay my premium subscription for home, office and my parents. if i can't afford it, i will downgrade to a lower package. Eschew. they even just put football on the lower package. What else tuna want? Nawa!
